While I normally don't dress up for Halloween, this was my shadow on the way to work on Monday morning. It was actually one of two costumes I wore this year. Can anyone guess my costume above? Back to regular food posts soon. This has been a very busy week.
Slightly Cracked: Pickled Eggs
We like eggs in our house and eat them every which way possible: made into an omelette, scrambled, as part of a quiche, a frittata, served with rice and fried SPAM, included in soups and hard boiled. It's a great source of protein and our refrigerator is always stocked with eggs for a quick meal.... Continue Reading →
Paul’s Birthday: It’s All About The Cake
I would be remiss not to do a post about Paul's birthday. We celebrated Paul's birthday this past Wednesday -- one of the hottest days for October in recorded history. Last year, we celebrated in Cleveland and Paul didn't have a cake. Instead, we had frozen custard and Paul's was flavored with birthday cake --... Continue Reading →
Mi Amore: Italian Cookies
It's become almost a weekly routine for me to go to Little Italy's Farmers market every Saturday. I have it down to a science, really. Wake up at 7 a.m.. Take my morning walk. Consume coffee. Hop in the shower. Start laundry. Head off to San Diego's Little Italy. All this is usually before 10... Continue Reading →
Puh-Puh-PICKLE Puss??? — Cartoons, Cooking & Food
Retro television alert! I'm the one with the big ears and extremely short dress. As with most people in my age group, I consumed cartoons in great quantities in my youth. While I won't pretend that sitting for hours on end in front of a television set was healthy, cartoons had a significant impact during... Continue Reading →
A Study in Savory Parfaits
Every year I like to predict food trends. With cupcakes being the reigning trend the last several years, trying to find something new that will catch fire that spreads across the globe is always something I like to ponder. I've been rooting for empanadas to make it big time but realistically foresee pie or donuts... Continue Reading →
Me Oh My, Thomcord Pie
I've been having pie on the brain lately. Peach pie. Strawberry pie. Apple pie. And especially, grape pie. There's something about the impending approach of fall that drives me into pie mode like no other season does. It's been two years since I made a Concord grape pie. It was a daunting task to remove seeds... Continue Reading →

Twice a year during Restaurant Week, diners have the opportunity to sample a variety 180+ San Diego County restaurants. This year's fall event begins September 18 and continues for two weeks until September 30. And there's a new option this time: a two-course lunch for $10, $15 or $20. It's a given that the choices for restaurant week are... Continue Reading →
Easy Peasy Creme Brulee French Toast
In 2005 I decided to start blogging. The main purpose (as with most blogs) was to keep sort of an online diary, but about food. I documented what I ate, what I cooked, my thoughts about food, yadda yadda yadda. The blog covered my move to Los Angeles (where I became more serious about blogging),... Continue Reading →
San Diego Blackout: There Were Donuts
Everyone in Southern California has their own story to share about Thursday's widespread blackout. Ours involved a trip to Viejas Casino -- one of the few places in San Diego that still had power. One quick cellphone charge later (reminder to self: must get a car charger for my iPhone), we went back home and... Continue Reading →
