In the spirit of hashtag sports — and March Madness — I present the first annual Friday Fast Food/Fast Casual Fishtacular Regional Championship. For the rest of the month, I’ll be pitting fish sandwiches against each other in a tournament bracket, from Crazy Eights to Final Four and culminating in The Big Dance on March 26. Yes, I had to Google those terms.
For sake of fairness, I pitted San Diego metro-area fast food/fast casual chains against each other. It wouldn’t be fair to include out-of-county chains, especially since travel is largely kiboshed (thanks, COVID).
There were many regional fish sandwich contenders that didn’t make it to the Crazy Eights, such as Arby’s, Church’s Chicken, Wendy’s, Dairy Queen, Sonic, Del Taco, Rally’s and even Wienerschnitzel (AM/PM was eliminated early, and yes that’s a double entendre). Not sure anyone wanted to see the Sweet Sixteen and, to be honest, the idea of plowing through so many sandwiches in a week is pretty grim, if not suicidal.
Today I present the bracket, and you can play along if you desire. These battles will be heated, I’m sure… at least to an internal temperature of 165°F! Please, no wagering.

WoW! Being a pesky pescatarian myself, I did not know Carl’s Jr.’s famous Carl’s Catch was back!?! The last time I tried to get one, they said it was discontinued. Thanks for the update! I eagerly await your findings.
